La Geode
Tape Collage
Daniel in Drag
Inspired by Nan Goldin’s photography of drag queens in the 90s, I wanted to illustrate difference as a celebration rather than a source of suffering. I used my friend La Geode (Daniel) as a model for this piece. To allow for greater depth and stronger composition, I decided to do a tape collage rather than a paper collage, which would allow me to layer colours. Its deep and bold colours were a good way of representing the flamboyance and glamour of drag. This piece aimed to celebrate drag as an art form – from its use of colour, and makeup and wig styling – all emphasised beyond realism.
